How to Connect the Nexus 7 Tablet to a Computer via USB

The most direct way to connect a Nexus 7 tablet to a computer is by using a wire — specifically, the wire nestled cozily in the heart of a USB cable. You can do lots of things after making the USB connection. It all starts with connecting the cable.

The Nexus 10 tablet has the ability to connect with a USB peripheral, such as a mouse or keyboard — or any number of USB devices when a USB hub is attached. Not every USB device is supported, however, specifically devices that require supplemental drivers.

The mini-HDMI connection on the Nexus 10 is used to connect the tablet to an HDTV. That way you can view the tablet’s screen, watch a movie, or enjoy a photo slideshow on a large screen.

How to connect the Nexus 7 to your computer

The USB connection between the Nexus 7 and your computer works fastest when the devices are physically connected. You make this connection happen by using the USB cable that comes with the tablet. Like nearly every computer cable in the Third Dimension, the USB cable has two ends:

The A end of the USB cable plugs into the computer.

The other end of the cable plugs into the bottom of the Nexus 7.

The connectors are shaped differently and cannot be plugged in either backward or upside down.

After you understand how the cable works, plug the USB cable into one of the computer’s USB ports. Then plug the USB cable into the Nexus 7.

Unlike other Android devices, the Nexus 7 doesn’t show a USB connection status icon atop the screen when the connection is made.

How to deal with the USB connection in Windows

Between the Nexus 7 and your PC, you’ll find it’s the PC that exhibits the most concern when the two devices are connected. You’ll most likely see an AutoPlay dialog box appear when the tablet is first connected. Two different AutoPlay dialog boxes can appear, depending on how the USB connection is configured on the Nexus 7.

In Windows 8, things work differently. This prompt appears on the screen: Tap to Choose What Happens with This Device. Click or touch the prompt to view suggestions similar to those found in the AutoPlay dialog boxes.

Choose an option from the AutoPlay dialog box or just close the dialog box.

The AutoPlay dialog box may not appear when you connect the Nexus 7 to your PC. It’s possible to configure Windows not to display that dialog box, though if you’ve not messed with the AutoPlay settings, an AutoPlay dialog box shows up.

Even if the AutoPlay dialog box doesn’t appear, you can still access media and files stored on the Nexus 7 from your computer.

If you’re nerdy, you can open the Nexus 7’s icon in the Computer window; press the Win+E keyboard shortcut on your PC to see the Computer window. You find the Nexus 7 listed as either a Portable Media Player (MTP) or Digital Camera (PTP). Open the Nexus 7 icon to browse the tablet’s internal storage.

How to connect the Nexus 7 to a Mac

You need special software to goad your Nexus 7 and Macintosh into communicating; the Mac doesn’t natively recognize the tablet. Download the software from Android.com.

Install the software. Run it. From that point on, when you connect the Nexus 7 to the Macintosh, you see a special window appear, listing all folders and files found on the Nexus 7. Use the window for file management.

The Mac recognizes the Nexus 7 only if the tablet is configured as an MTP device.

How to configure the USB connection

Whether the Nexus 7 is recognized as a media device or a camera depends on how you configure the USB connection. If you’ve set the USB connection to MTP, the computer is fooled into thinking that the Nexus 7 is a portable media player. For the PTP connection, the PC believes the tablet to be a digital camera.

Set the Nexus 7’s USB mode by following these steps:

At the Home screen, touch the All Apps icon.

Open the Settings app.

Touch the Menu icon and then choose the command USB Computer Connection.

Choose either Media Device (MTP) or Camera (PTP).

The MTP connection isthe most flexible. If you find the Nexus 7 not recognized by your Windows computer, choose the PTP option.

MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol. PTP stands for Picture Transfer Protocol. Don’t bother memorizing these terms.

How to disconnect the Nexus 7

The process is cinchy: When you’re done transferring files, music, or other media between your PC and the tablet, close all programs and folders you have opened on your computer — specifically, those you’ve used to work with the tablet’s storage. Then you can disconnect the USB cable. That’s it.

It’s a Bad Idea to unplug the tablet while you’re transferring information or while a folder window is open on your computer. Doing so can damage the Nexus 7’s internal storage, rendering unreadable some of the information that’s kept there. To be safe, close those programs and folder windows you’ve opened before disconnecting.

Unlike other external storage on the Macintosh, there’s no need to eject the Nexus 7’s storage when you’re done accessing it. Simply unplug the tablet. The Mac doesn’t get angry when you do so.

PC won’t recognize Nexus 7 after upgrade to Windows 10

I have a Nexus 7 running Android version 6.0.1. My device is set to MTP for file transfers, but my laptop doesn’t recognize the tablet.

It did recognize it just fine until I upgraded to Windows 10.

I’ve read all the recent posts I could find and, per those, have uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Media Player – no luck.

I understand your concern, I suggest you to uninstall Universal Serial Bus controller’s driver and check if it works fine. Go to Device Manager. Right click on Universal Serial Bus Controller and check for any unknown drivers and uninstall it. Follow the steps below:

Click on Windows key + X and then, select Device Manager.

Locate and expand “Universal Serial Bus controllers” in the Device Manager Window.

Right-click on the “Universal Serial Bus controllers”, select all the Unknown drivers and click on “uninstall“.

Restart the computer and check if the tablet appears in File Explorer.

I fixed it! The key was being able to update the driver software for a device that wasn’t showing up anywhere in my driver list (even with the “show hidden items” option checked).

1. in Device Manager, right-click any device driver and select “update driver software”

2. when the “how do you want to search for driver software” box opens, select “browse my computer”

3. select “let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.

When I did #3, I saw a generic MTP device. I clicked on that and got a driver update. Then, I saw a notification asking what to do when the Nexus 7 was attached and selected the “open files” option. That made my device (and its files) visible in File Explorer.

The undisputed king of the hill when it comes to small Android tablets is Google’s Nexus 7, manufactured by Asus. It has been selling well since its July 2020 release and Google updated the line with a new version – the Nexus 7 (2020) in July 2020. It has a much higher resolution display, a faster processor, more RAM, and a camera, but Google has already acknowledged problems with multi-touch and GPS, which we deal with below.

While the diminutive tablet has been well received by critics and consumers alike, no product is perfect. That’s why we’ve dug up a list of Nexus 7 problems and tried to find potential solutions and workarounds for anyone suffering. On this page we’ll deal with the latest 2020 version, so if you have the older 2020 model then skip to page two.

Nexus 7 (2020) Issues and Bugs

Problem: SIM card not recognized or no signal

A few people with the LTE version of the Nexus 7 (2020) have run into problems where the SIM card seems to stop working. This is usually accompanied by a “No SIM card” message. Sometimes they get the message “SIM card added” and a prompt to restart. For some people the network just seems to go missing and there’s no service, but they don’t get any message about the SIM card. Bear in mind that SIM cards from U.S. carriers will not necessarily work in European Nexus 7 tablets and vice versa because they may use different channels.

Potential solutions:

  • Try rebooting the Nexus 7 by holding down the Power button, ignore the prompts and wait for it to restart.
  • Try pulling down the notification shade and going into Airplane mode and then turn it off again.
  • Try turning the Nexus 7 off and removing the SIM card, make sure the card and tray are clean and then reinsert it before turning the tablet back on.
  • Check what your Access Point Name settings should be with your mobile service provider and then go to Settings > Wireless & networks > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names and make sure they’re correct.
  • If you’re able to use another SIM card then test it in your Nexus 7 just to verify that it’s not a faulty SIM card.

Glitch: Nexus 7 not recognized by computer

If you find that you plug your Nexus 7 into your computer or laptop using the USB cable and the computer fails to recognize it then you’re not the only one. Luckily it should be an easy fix in the settings. If not you may need a new driver, here’s what you should try:

Potential solutions:

  • Go to Settings > Storage and tap the three vertical dots at the top right of the screen and then USB computer connection. Make sure that Media device (MTP) is ticked and try plugging it in to your computer again.
  • It’s also worth plugging it into a different USB port and trying a different cable, just in case that’s your problem.
  • If that didn’t work and your computer is running Windows 7, you can try connecting the Nexus 7 via USB then right click on Computer from the Start menu and click on Device Manager. You should see the Asus Android Devices listed at the top and you can expand and right click on Android Composite ADB Interface and then choose Update Driver Software… At the next pop up choose Browse my computer for driver software then let me pick from a list and choose USB Composite Device and click Next to update.

Problem: Camera not working

There have been a few problems reported with the Nexus 7 camera. Some people have found that there’s no option to switch to the rear camera in the camera app. Others have tried to start the app only to see the message “Camera error. Can’t connect to the camera.”

Potential solutions:

  • Try holding down the Power button until the tablet reboots.
  • Go to Settings > Apps, swipe over to the All tab and find the Camera. Tap Clear cache and then try loading it up again.
  • Make sure you have the latest update via Settings > About tablet > System updates.

A lot of people have reported an issue when they turn the Nexus 7 on. They hold down the Power button until it starts up, and it gets as far as the Google logo screen or maybe the colored X, but won’t go any further; it just freezes on that screen.

Potential fixes:

  • First, try holding down the power button for 30 seconds, ignore the pop-up options and wait until the device reboots.
  • If that doesn’t work, try a factory reset (but note that you will lose all data on the device).

Here are the steps to do it without the screen:

  1. If your tablet is on, power it off.
  2. Press and hold the Power button until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
  3. Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
  4. Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
  5. While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
  6. Use the volume keys to scroll to “wipe data/factory reset” and press Power to select it.
  7. Scroll down to “Yes – erase all user data” and press Power to select it.

Problem: Speaker buzzing or static

A number of Nexus 7 owners have been complaining about a buzzing or static sound that is especially apparent at low volumes. For some people the noise is still there even if they mute the speaker.

Workarounds:

  • Use headphones instead and you shouldn’t have any problem. You can also plug headphones in just to stop any sound coming through the speakers when muted.
  • Use a portable Bluetooth speaker instead.

Potential fixes:

  • For some people this seems to be related to the brightness settings on the tablet. It’s worth dragging down the notification shade and tapping Brightness to decrease it and see if it makes any difference.
  • Google did release a fix for this problem, so make sure that you have the latest update in Settings > About tablet > System updates.

Problem: Random reboots

A lot of people have encountered issues with the new Nexus 7 (2020) randomly restarting. This was a common problem on the old Nexus 7 as well. With the new model, many people report that the reboots are occurring when using Chrome, but the issue doesn’t seem to be limited to that.

Potential solutions:

  1. An update could solve this. You should automatically get updates (this is a Nexus device, after all), but you can also go to Settings > About tablet and check your Android version. You can tap System updates and then Check now to see if a new update is available.
  2. Make sure that all of your apps are up to date. The easiest way is to load up the Play Store and tap the Menu button, then choose My apps. You’ll see an Update all option at the top right. The problem could be an app that hasn’t been optimized for Android 4.3, so if you notice the problem relates to a specific app, send a message to the developer and try to use an alternative until they bring out an update. You can check if an app is the culprit by booting into safe mode. Press and hold the power button then touch and hold the Power off option that pops up on screen and then touch OK in the next box that pops up to boot into safe mode. If the problem is gone then an app is likely to be the cause. Restart the device to get out of safe mode and hunt for the app responsible.
  3. Try a soft reset next by holding down the power button for 30 seconds, ignore the pop-up options and wait until the device reboots.
  4. If you’re still having random restart problems then it’s time to try a factory reset. Make sure you back up all your content (your Google account will back up a lot of data so you can restore it afterwards). Tap the Menu button and choose Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset > Reset tablet and then enter your pattern, PIN, or password if prompted. Finally tap Erase everything.
  5. If none of the above has worked,then you should take the device back to the retailer where you bought it, or contact Google about a replacement.

Glitch: Multi-touch and typing erratic

A few owners have had problems with their new Nexus 7 (2020) registering multiple touches on the screen and skipping around erratically. There have also been reports of single taps on the touchscreen keyboard being registered as double or triple taps. If you’re uncertain whether you have a genuine problem with your touchscreen then try installing an app like Yet Another MultiTouch Test and you can see visually whether it is registering touches correctly.

Potential solutions:

  1. If you have a screen protector then it could be impacting on the touch sensitivity. Or it’s possible you are used to a less sensitive touchscreen and you’re pressing too hard or for too long. Try adjusting the way you use it and see if the problem clears up.
  2. It could be a software issue caused by a specific app. Try booting into safe mode by holding down the power button and then touch and hold Power off and tap OK in the next pop-up. If it works better in safe mode then you should restart and try to remove apps until you find the one responsible.
  3. It could come down to faulty hardware. If you see erratic behavior when using the Yet Another MultiTouch Test app then you should return it to the retailer or Google and get a replacement. Google has acknowledged this issue and an investigation is apparently underway.

Problem: GPS not working or dropping

It seems that quite a few Nexus 7 (2020) owners are reporting problems with the GPS. For most people it seems to connect fine initially, but after a few minutes, or when switching apps, the GPS drops and won’t reconnect.

Workarounds:

  • A lot of people are encountering this issue when they use more than one app that wants to connect to GPS. If you just use Google Maps, for example, it should work, but if you also use something like Ingress, Waze, or a weather app, then it might start dropping out. You could limit your Nexus 7 to one GPS app.
  • If you simply reboot the device by holding down the power button until it restarts (ignore the pop-up) then you should find the GPS will work again.

Potential solutions:

  • Wait for a software update. Google is working on a solution. This is likely to be fixed by an update so keep an eye out for updates the system via Settings > About tablet > System updates and make sure your apps are up to date in Play Store via Settings > My apps > Update all.
  • You could try exchanging your device at the retailer or via Google on the off-chance that it’s a hardware fault, but this doesn’t seem likely.

Problem: Screen flickering

A few people have noticed that the screen of their Nexus 7 (2020) is prone to flickering. This is particularly noticeable on lower brightness settings.

Workaround:

  • Turn auto-brightness off and make sure that the screen brightness is set to brighter than 40 percent by pulling down the notification shade from the top right and selecting Brightness then sliding it up.

Potential solution:

  • This could be a hardware bug. You may even find that the screen turns off completely if you put the brightness down too low. In that case you have to go to Google or your retailer and request a replacement device. Some people who encountered this issue exchanged the device and report that it isn’t present on the new one.

Problem: Won’t recharge or rapid battery drain

Some owners have reported that their Nexus 7 (2020) will not charge up at all when plugged in. Others have found that the battery is discharging much faster than expected.

Workaround:

  • If you find the battery is draining much faster than expected then it may be due to a specific app that isn’t optimized for the latest version of Android, for example, a lot of people report problems with Netflix after the 4.3 update. If you want to confirm that a third-party app is the problem then try using the Nexus 7 in safe mode. You could test it with a different charger first, just to make sure the charger is not faulty.

Problem: Nexus 7 will not turn on or charge

Have you ever found that your Nexus 7 won’t turn on at all and it won’t charge when you plug it in? Don’t worry. You are not alone. There are a couple of things you can try to bring it back to life. This problem seems to occur frequently if you allow your Nexus 7 battery to run completely down or leave it idle for long periods.

Possible solutions:

  1. Hold down the Power button for a full 30 seconds. The Nexus 7 should start up.
  2. If that didn’t work then try this: Plug in the charger and press the Power button and the Volume Down button together. You should see a menu pop up. Use the Volume rocker to go down to Power Off and press the Power button to select it. When the Nexus 7 turns off, remove the charger from the device and then plug it back in again. You should see the battery sign appear if it worked.

Problem: Lag, reboots, or brightness issues after installing Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

A lot of Nexus 7 owners reported serious problems after updating the tablet to Android 4.2. Some people encountered general lag or sluggish performance, others complained of brightness issues for the display, and worst of all, some people encountered random reboots. There was also a bug introduced in the People app that removed the month of December, but Google rolled out an update to fix that bug quickly.

Possible solutions:

  1. First of all try going to the Google Currents app (if you have it), open up the Settings menu, and unchecking Enable Background Sync and then reboot your Nexus 7.
  2. If that doesn’t work then try a factory reset, but keep in mind that you will lose all data on the device, including all your apps (a lot of data will be backed up in your Google account so you can restore it afterward). Go to Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset > Reset tablet and then enter your pattern, PIN, or password if prompted. Then tap “Erase everything.”

Problem: Screen separation

Some Nexus 7 tablets shipped with a screen defect which means that the screen lifts slightly away from the plastic bezel, which can create some creaking noises. It’s generally caused by screws that haven’t been properly tightened, or in some cases, screws that are completely missing. It’s relatively easy to fix and you’ll find guides online, but you shouldn’t have to fix yourself and you could void your warranty so we don’t recommend that course of action.

Solution: If you bought your Nexus 7 from Google Play then call Google customer support. If you bought it elsewhere, then you need to contact Asus directly. In both cases you should get a replacement free of charge because this is a known issue.

Problem: Microphone doesn’t work

You may find that the Nexus 7 microphone is failing to pick up any sound. This could be because of a fault; it could be because of the placement or the cover; or it could be because something got in there and blocked it.

Possible solutions:

  1. Use compressed air or, if you’re in the mood, suck on the microphone hole. If there’s a dust blockage then this should fix it.
  2. Some people have reported that it isn’t aligned properly with the hole or that the rubber edging is covering it. You could open the back cover and take a look, but you may void your warranty by poking around so be very cautious.
  3. The hole for the microphone could be completely missing or you might have a faulty microphone. In either case, you’ll want to return it and get a replacement unit by calling Google customer support if you purchased it from Google Play or contacting Asus directly if you got it somewhere else.

Problem: Headphone jack doesn’t work

There have been quite a few reports of people getting no sound at all when they plug in their headphones, or getting crackly intermittent sound. Before you panic, make sure to try your headphones in another device so you know they aren’t the problem. You should also check that the volume is turned up on the Nexus 7 and not very low or even muted. If that doesn’t help, there are a couple of other potential solutions.

Possible solutions:

  1. The port is very tight. Push harder and wait until you hear the headphones click into place. You may have to apply more pressure than expected, but this will often solve the problem.
  2. If it’s a hardware failure then you’ll need to contact Google or Asus for a replacement.

Problem: Wi-Fi won’t connect or repeatedly drops out

You may find that your Nexus 7 refuses to connect to your Wi-Fi network or drops it frequently. There are various potential causes for this and not all of them are Nexus 7 related, but if the tablet is your problem then you can try a few things.

Possible solutions:

  1. Check the date and time settings on your Nexus 7 and make sure they are correct. Some people reported an issue with the date being wrong.
  2. Turn NFC off via Settings > More, and then uncheck the box next to NFC. This has worked for some people.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off and on again or turn your router off and on again. This will often temporarily fix the problem.
  4. You may have to consult your ISP or router troubleshooting guide to identify the issue.
  5. Some people found that the weak Wi-Fi was being caused by the back cover being loose and the Wi-Fi antenna not having a good contact. Try pressing on the back cover to make sure that it is firmly in place and keep an eye on the strength of your Wi-Fi as you do so. If you want to attempt to fix it yourself, there’s a guide at XDA Developers forum for removing the back cover and tweaking the antenna. If you’re out of warranty, then it might be the best option.

Problem: Touchscreen is not responsive

If you are unlucky enough to find that your touchscreen doesn’t respond or that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t then you can try the standard troubleshooting steps.

Possible solutions:

  1. Soft reset the Nexus 7 by holding down the power button for 30 seconds.
  2. Factory reset without the touchscreen by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down then press Volume Down twice and hit the Power button to select Recovery Mode. Hold the Power button down and hit Volume Up and then use the volume rocker to select the “wipe data/factory” reset option and press the Power button to select it. Use the volume rocker again to select “Yes – erase all user data” and press the Power button to activate.
  3. If the reset doesn’t work then you should contact Google, Asus, or the retailer, depending on where you bought the device, and request a replacement.

Problem: Crackling speaker or loss of sound

The Nexus 7 speaker can sound distorted, especially at high volumes, and sometimes people report loss of sound completely. If you find that your sound is fine through headphones, but problems with the speaker persist, then it’s likely to be a hardware fault.

Solution: You’ll need to request a replacement from Google, Asus, or the retailer where you bought the Nexus 7.

My computer: laptop running Win 7-64 bit

* attempting to delete the file winsub.sys results in a message saying permission is required from TrustedInstaller. I don’t know what that is, nor how to get permission. So, while I have been able to uninstall the driver, I have not been able to delete it.

NOTE: wpdusb.sys is designated as obsolete by Microsoft

The device worked properly before the last system update for the Nexus tablet. The device now connects to the PC, and is recognised as being connected. It simply does not display any files.

I am an author and use my tablet extensively for writing. It is important for me to be able to connect the tablet to the computer and move files between the two. Please do not suggest work-around solutions such as Drive or Dropbox. I prefer to have devices that work properly.

How To : The Definitive Guide on How to Restore Your Nexus 7 Tablet (Even if You’ve Bricked It)

Something went wrong and your Nexus 7 is freaking out on you. Maybe you flashed a bad ROM or ZIP file, or maybe it’s just bugging, and it’s time to restore your tablet back to a working condition. Thankfully, you’ve already made a backup of your Nexus 7!

Note: If you don’t have a back up, don’t worry! I’ve still got you covered. Just scroll down to the Restoring to Factory Stock section below, and be sure to back up before you start messing around with other ROMs next time!

Whether you just need to restore your tablet with an Android OS backup made with TWRP, or need to go even further and take your Nexus 7 back to factory settings, I’ll show you how. Let’s begin!

Restoring Your Nexus 7 with TWRP

You’ll need a custom recovery for this.

If you don’t have one or know what TWRP or a custom recovery is, head over to my definitive guide to soft-modding your Nexus 7 to get started. It’s a must read for any Nexus 7 user.

Begin by powering off your device, then press and hold both the power and volume down button to boot into TWRP.

Tap on Restore, then choose your restore package that you made when backing up.

Then just Swipe to Restore.

That’s it! Your Nexus 7 will restore to the last time you made that backup!

Restoring Your Apps

This does not require root or a custom recovery.

Download and install App Backup and Restore (free) from Google Play onto your device. Launch it and tap Archived. Check the apps you want restored and tap Restore at the bottom.

If the install is blocked, enable Unknown Sources in Settings -> Security.

That’s it! Your apps will then restore back to your Nexus 7!

Restoring to Factory Stock with Toolkit

If you need some serious fixing, it’s probably best to go back to the factory settings. Maybe you’re just tired of custom ROMs. Well, here’s how to restore your Nexus 7 to its out-of-the-box state—no mods, no hacks, no tweaks.

On your PC, begin by downloading the Nexus 7 Root Toolkit. Install the toolkit by clicking “Next” through the various prompts.

Once the installation is complete, go ahead and run the toolkit. A window will pop up asking for your device model. Choose your device from the list along with its OS version and click “Apply”.

Head over to “Initial Setup” and click “Full Driver Installation. “

Follow the guide provided in the toolkit to install the required drivers for your Nexus 7. I recommend “Driver Solution #3”, but any of the three options should work. The toolkit has a built-in guide with pictures that will aid you in installing the drivers.

Now with the drivers installed, make sure they’re working by testing them over in the “Step 3” tab. The toolkit will verify if the drivers are properly installed and working.

Boot into fastboot mode by powering off your Nexus 7, then press and hold both the power and volume down buttons. Plug in your Nexus 7 to your PC with the USB cable.

On your PC, click “Flash Stock + Unroot” in the toolkit. The toolkit will download the factory Android OS your Nexus 7 shipped with.

The rest will be automated by the toolkit. Here it is flashing the factory OS and then rebooting your device all fully restored.

Your Nexus 7 tablet all restored! You can now unplug it from your PC. SUCCESS!

Thanks a lot. I’ve restored my tablet from the soft-bricket state without any complication. The ToolKit made all procedure easily without my direct intervention. That was so easy. So I recommend this toolkit for every novice. One have only to estimate for itself what problem to solve.

I have a question. I used the toolkit & it worked great. My mistake was trying a new rom. Which for whatever reason didn’t take. It bootlooped, so I uninstalled it. And yup you guessed it, I didn’t backup, and now basically I have no o/s.. So I went back to the toolkit & tried the above procedure. Two problems are occurring. 1i can’t turn on USB debugging, which I’m told doesn’t really matter doing this.

And problem #2 is now my cpu won’t recognize any drivers. The toolkit keeps telling me that there are none installed? Should I delete the toolkit and start from scratch again? And not being able to turn on debugging got me worried. Any suggestions would be great.

Put your tablet into bootloader mode. Power it off and the power it back on with both volume down and the power button held down. Use the option to restore to stock in the toolkit, it’ll fix everything right up.

Just repeat the hacking process again afterward.

I’m now following these steps on how restore my Nexus 7, I flashed a custom rom and kernel to my device, which was corrupted, didn’t backup my stock rom. now stuck on Google logo..

I can access my bootloader & TWRP recovery so I hope this guide work for me. I’m now on the ‘Nexus Factory Image Downloader’ screen, i’m at 96%.. Will let you know if this work out..

Sounds like a spotty internet connection. Redownload the restore file and give it another go.

My problem is that I have the dreaded “Black Screen”. Holding down any # of combinations of buttons for any period of time does nothing. Battery is connected. I’ve tried to disconnect and reconnect the batter. Nothing happened. When I plug in the device while the battery is disconnected, the LCD turns on, but does nothing when I reconnect the battery. When I plug in the charger with the battery connected, the device does nothing. When I connect the device to the pc, it says the “usb device is not recognized”. I really am running out of ideas on how to fix this issue and I’m really hoping the toolkit will help, but will it work if it cannot recognize the device?

The battery is too low. Leave the connector on for at least 24 hours and then try again.

Hi, My Nexus 7 is boot looped. I want to restore to factory stock so I downloaded your root toolkit, but am confused about the driver installation. Obviously I can’t get into the nexus settings to enable USB debugging? Should I just ignore and proceed to “Launch Device Mgr”?, if so, what condition should the Nexus be in.. off, powered on and looping, or in “fastboot mode”?

Well, despite getting no response to my questions, I did trudge on and got my Nexus back up and running. Loaded the option #3 driver, never could get the driver test to pass, but since Windows told me my device was performing properly, I proceeded to “restore to stock”. First attempt failed, but in analyzing the results noticed things were failing because device was locked. None of your instructions mentioned running the Unlock script, but after doing so, the restore process worked as advertised. Thanks for all the work in creating this, for the most part painless software, but I would suggest fleshing out your instructions a bit.

That’s not true. This toolkit applies to all users regardless if they ever softmodded or not (locked/unlocked). Others have reported success and no other issues aside from a spotty internet connection or the battery running too low. Things can go wrong and not all guides can account for why certain things fail, you are after all modding a tablet and whatever can go wrong will.

I specifically chose this toolkit because its automated, will work for everyone, and is the most popular one.

i can’t do anything if I’m Locked.

Not to be a jerk, as i can understand how frustrating these things can be at times, but who are you to be complaining about service. This is a free site. The alternative is that you go pay someone smarter than yourself to fix it for you.

I agree it is much friendlier than typing long strings of directory paths in a command line, but I can assure you it did not work until I ran the unlock script. Only then did I see the small unlocked symbol near the bottom of the Google boot screen. Prior to running unlock, it showed “boot failed” in tiny print at upper left of screen and, as I said, while running, the command prompt screen reported multiple fails attributed to “device locked”. Coincidence?

John, are you trying to install/upgrade to 4.3 when you encounter the “boot-looped”? If so, after all the factory restore you did, any success on upgrading your rooted Nexus 7 table using OTA (Over The Air from Googlr) to 4.3?

Unfortunately none of this works for me. I just get stuck at the flying android “Start” screen, and a “Booting failed” message when i click ‘start’.

I have tried all this without success, something weird must be going on with my device. There are definitely no driver issues as the device manager shows no unknown devices, plus I can flash recovery images by “fastboot flash recovery filename” and I can also use “adb push filename” when booted into recovery. The flashing process basically seems to finish quickly (it is supposed to take a few minutes to push a 180MB file to the device), but I get no errors during the process. When I attempt to boot up my device, it goes into bootloader and says “failed to boot”.

Did anybody encounter this? The exact same thing happens when I try to use the “Nexus 7 Toolkit” to flash it.

I seem to have killed my Nexus 7 by connecting it to a Samsung Galaxy charger for a few hours by accident. Easy to do, the jack fits like it belongs there.

It won’t boot up, just hangs with the big ‘X’ screen. Doesn’t show on file explorer on my PC. It will go to the boot screen when I press the start and volume buttons, but won’t restart or restore from there.

I’ve tried a restore to factory settings using the toolkit described here, but the software can’t find the Nexus to even start it.

Not bothered about any data on it, just want it back in working order!

I have followed all of these steps after apparently wiping everything but bootloader, my device is unlocked, and it apparently flashed successfully. However, the device does not shut down on it’s own, cutting it off manually and restarting it leads to Google in white text, the unlocked symbol, and the boot-loader menu (Start, Power Off, Recovery Mode, and Restart Bootloader). Pressing Start does nothing and restarting it leads to the same screen. I’ve been all over XDA, I’ve tried two different toolkits and a manual install of stock rom, and nothing is working. The device is rooted and unlocked, and I am at a loss for what to do. Someone please help me.

After the Flash Stock procedure the Nexus remains in bootloader screen with Start. Trying to repower ends up with Start on screen + Booting failed message which moves down a line on every attempt to start. I think it is mentioned above by David.

I am travelling and don’t have a PC at hand. Is there a chance to get back to stock rom without a PC? I can boot into TWRP.

When I flashed ROM something went wrong and then I flashed apps but I had no backup and now stuck in soft brick/bootloader loop.

When I try to flash stock and unroot I get the same thing as James C:

Have you had any luck resolving this? I’m in the same state, and from what I can gather, the bootloader is in a state of flux between locked and unlocked, essentially blocking any changes to the system image, and cancelling any means of fixing it.

Did you ever get this mess straightened out?

Just used NRT to bring life back to my Nexus 7, good piece of kit!

this was due to shutting down and restarting, whilst booting with the coloured cross a white squared started flash size about 2″ x 2″. resulting in failed boot.

Tried the normal power and volume button to get to fast-boot control, switched to recovery, press power “failed” hence the use of NRT.

Now its working so I tried the fast boot recovery, and its still not working, so how do you re install the fastboot part of recovery?

Hope some can help on this.

hi my device is stuck trying to do a factory reset (its stuck on “Erasing. “.) its preventing me to booting into recovery to use the toolkit. Do I have any options or is the device 100% bricked!? IT’s unrooted and un touched. I’m so surprised its just got stuck on a factory reset. :(

I’m amazed of autoupdate feature of Wug’s NRT. My first NRT’s version was 1.62. Now its new version number is 1.7.7. All newnesses by autoupdate option.

This toolkit allowed me to obtain the Android KitKat for Nexus 7 Wifi only (2020) tablet as soon as possible.

I was having the same problem as you guys, you know bootlooping, i solved it. First you must open nexus root toolkit and then launch advanced utilities and change quick tools to fastboot. Second step is to go to options in the top left corner of toolkit then go to flash stock and enable force flash mode. THen just go to flash stock plus unroot and bammm, it will work. Give it a try guys, i am not sure if it will help you but for me it worked and now i am running 4.4.2 on my Nexus 7 2020.

Mine try to return to stock rrom. failed can’t boot up.
I tried to reflash. everything goes like ok. it re boot to bootlaoder.

Than. it says bootloader require update. failed.

After that. its just stay at the bootloader. for very long and the instruction did say it it stayed at the bootloader- update may have failed.

Just fixed mine. used wugfresh’s toolkit. go into options and allow force flash, also check softbricked/bootloop state. fixed bootloader issue and now I have kit kat stock installed just fine.

i messed up my nexus 7. I accidentally wiped out my os without backing it up while trying to upgrade to 4.3 using twrp. I use this guide repeatedly and followed every step but I always ends up with “ADB DEVICE WAS NOT FOUND”. Need your help please. I tried already every guide I can get but to no avail. thanks

how do you do this if you can’t access an os? or if all the backups you make always uninstall themselves? or if the root toolkit won’t do anything whatsoever? I can only use the bootloader and recovery mode, I can’t boot anything, and the bootloader is locked for some reason and I can’t OEM unlock without USB debugging, and I don’t have an OS, and the backup I made broke and uninstalled itself.

This worked for me but to only restore a porked OS that I could at least boot into.

The root tool kit can not Identify the device from the recovery menu shown in his article; as at that time, USB debugging can not be enabled from the recovery menu. You have to boot the device to enable usb debugging.

The key to this is to have RT know your device and be able to write to it via ADB.

If you can not see your device in Windows file explorer, most likely RT won’t see it either thus can not write to it.

You can though boot into TWRP and have a bu image on a OTG flash drive I believe.

Here is the upshaw:

I have yet to see an article that tells one how to successfully restore a Nexus 7 when one cannot boot it or get in to the recovery menu.

I just tested this with SDK toolkit.

With device booted fullly running, “adb devices” returns “07844f78 device”

When I boot into the bootloader, “adb devices” returns nothing.

Thus, unless you have TWRP or CW recovery or can boot into some recovery or the system, I think your up the creek without a paddle.

What I have read is that the Nexus 7 boots into 3 modes:

1) regular (system)
2) fastboot
3) recovery

You need drivers installed for all 3 of these modes.

I believe the NR Toolkit uses fastboot modes and one may not have the recovery drivers properly in place for you to execute commands in SDK or while running the toolbox in fast mode.

We most all have the system/regular drivers in place thus can do a restore easier once the N7 is booted into its OS.

Just noticed something.

When you or I boot into recovery mode then go to device manager in windows, I see that my device is not longer a ADB device and has dropped down to “other devices – Nexus 7” with no drivers installed.

Could be something with the Hardware ID of your tablet missing in the drivers while in recovery mode.

See if I can find more.

OK I solved the problem

When you boot in to the recovery you need a separate driver. Just watch in device manager as the driver changes before your eyes when you boot into recovery.

Once the device dropped down into “other devices” I clicked on “properties” then “details” then the “Hardware ID” dropdown to get 2 ID’S

My system is WIN 7 64 BIT so I added the following to both generic and Nexus 7 sections to be safe under the heading Google.NTamd64

32 bit win under Google.NTx86 if your have 32 bit

Here is what I added to both Generic and Nexus 7 sections under Google.NTamd64

%SingleBootLoaderInterface% = USBInstall, USB\VID18D1&PIDD001

A copy of the “android¬winusb.inf” is in my drop box for your reference.

Once I finished editing the inf driver file, I uninstalled and reinstalled the divers using the new one I edited.

ADB then saw my tablet in recovery mode.

I have used this toolkit to flash stock and unroot to repair a Nexus 7 (first issue) running 4.2.2 twice now when it has got stuck in a boot loop cycle and becomes completely unusable. Both times this has saved the tablet from the bin so I am very grateful. I would be really interested to know what causes the device to go into this boot loop state to try and avoid it again in the future, is it a fault with the os. any ideas out there?

I bought a new Nexus 7, the new version, because I dropped my older Nexus 7. It will not restore anything, apps, data, nothing. I am using the same email and login. I don’t know what to do. When I download an app I paid for I only get the trial version. I have to buy everything again.

I was nervous because, since my tablet was bricked, I couldn’t change the USB debugging settings. Apparently I didn’t need to.

It took several tries, I don’t even know what driver ended up working. I did have to Unlock first, which wasn’t mentioned in the post, but is kind of common sense. But once I got to the Flash Stock + Unroot step, it worked flawlessly. Tablet is back to original OS and actually works.

Since every thing is snowed out thought Id just have some fun, so I Just installed the latest stock! Thank you!! My only problem is not following the directions. it works when you do!
